Domestic Violence
Domestic violence is all too prevalent in our community. Therefore, the YWCA provides a much-needed oasis of hope for women and children who may think they have no alternative than to remain in a bad situation. Our 24-hour Domestic Violence Hotline provides crisis intervention, counseling and shelter placement to more than 2,500 callers each year. If you or someone you know is in need of help, please call our emergency hotline at # 619-234-3164.
The YWCA of San Diego County began providing emergency shelter and services for survivors of domestic violence in 1978. In January 1999, the Becky's House ® Domestic Violence Programs were started thanks to a telephone call made to the Jeff and Jer Showgram ®, a local radio show. The woman who made this call, known only as "Becky," was looking for advice about her relationship with her partner. As she provided the details of her story, it became clear that "Becky" was a victim of intimate partner abuse and was unable to seek help due to the lack of available resources. Inspired by this incident, the community united with the YWCA to build the first long term transitional housing community in the City of San Diego for victims of domestic violence and their children, know as Becky's House ®. The YWCA gained the support of politicians, businesses, artists, foundations and private citizens who all contributed to the opening in 2001 of the nine-unit, 30 bed, Becky's House ®. Today, all of the services provided by the Becky's House ® Domestic Violence Programs support the individual's journey from victim to survivor. The program includes a 30-day domestic violence emergency shelter, a 24-Hour emergency hotline, and two 18-month transitional living programs for victims of domestic violence and their families. Services include individual and group counseling, legal assistance, music and art therapies, financial literacy training, and employment and housing services. The Becky's House ® Domestic Violence Programs serve an average of 500 women and children each year.
