Sara F. Moser
1931–2026
Sara Moser described herself as an activist, political junky, teacher, and homemaker when we honored her with a YWCA Dedication Award in 2017 to recognize her steadfast advocacy for women. She shared her personal journey of activism that started with joining the League of Women Voters in the mid-1950s to learn about the political world. She was pregnant and living near Washington D.C. and took issue with an existing law — one that prohibited pregnant women from teaching in public schools. Not willing to stay silent, Sara worked tirelessly to change rules, regulations, and laws in her pursuit of equality and women’s rights.
In 1968, after moving to San Diego, Sara continued her activism. She started her career in fighting for reproductive rights, eventually working for Planned Parenthood and rising through their ranks to lead fundraising campaigns and serve on their Board of Directors. Sara was unwavering in her dedication to community service and her impact extended far beyond a single cause.
Focused on equal opportunity, she helped found The Women’s Bank of San Diego in 1975, expanding access to credit for women at a time when it was exceedingly difficult to obtain, and more often unattainable. She received numerous accolades for her extensive work in the community, including being inducted into the San Diego Women’s Hall of Fame as an Activist in 2015.
Connected with YWCA since 1985, Sara was a longstanding supporter and closely aligned with our mission to empower women. She was passionately engaged as a member of our Board of Directors from 2003 to 2007, bringing her wealth of knowledge to serve on fundraising committees and lead organizational initiatives. Sara’s drive was unrelenting and she inspired all of us to strive to do better.
Sara passed away on March 30, 2026, and we are deeply saddened to lose such a force of nature. It was an honor and a privilege to have worked alongside her — a fearless trailblazer who was absolutely devoted to advancing the rights of women. We celebrate Sara’s enduring legacy that will continue to impact generations of women to come.
