Nancy’s Story

Nancy and her young daughters came to Becky’s House® Emergency Shelter after suffering years of abuse from their father. He was often verbally, emotionally, and physically abusive and became more violent over the years. Nancy fled many times, but he always found a way to get to her. She struggled to find a safe place to stay with three children to support and without a job. Nancy feared for their lives and knew she had to leave for good. Fortunately, she was connected to YWCA through a referral from the county.

When she arrived at the shelter, Nancy and her children found a safe place with a support team to help them begin healing. She attended therapy and worked closely with her case manager to develop a plan. Nancy was determined to gain stability and moved to our transitional housing program. She quickly enrolled her children in school, found part-time employment, and started paying down her debt as she focused on strengthening her family.

Nancy’s housing coordinator helped her create a savings plan and apply for affordable housing. Through her perseverance, she found a 3-bedroom apartment and was able to exit the program early. By then, she was working full-time, had increased her savings, and improved her credit score. She was thrilled to also receive temporary rental assistance and support from our domestic violence housing first program. Nancy is looking forward to continuing her progress and creating a new life for her family.
