$50,000 Grant Award to YWCA of San Diego County

YWCA of San Diego County is honored to announce a $50,000 grant award from the Verizon Foundation. Their partnership provides significant support for our Becky’s House® Domestic Violence Programs, which encompass a 24-hour crisis hotline, emergency shelter, transitional housing, mental health counseling, legal support, and comprehensive integrated services.

“Domestic violence is far too prevalent in our community and requires strong partnerships to change the statistics. We are proud to support YWCA of San Diego County and their commitment to prevention and ending the cycle of abuse,” said Heidi Flato, public relations manager for the Pacific market of Verizon.

One in four women and one in seven men will experience domestic violence in their lifetime, and children and youth are present in more than 70% of cases. In San Diego County, 17,306 domestic violence cases were reported to law enforcement in 2017, although the majority of cases are never reported due to fear, intimidation, and isolation within abusive relationships.

“Prevention is a key component to ending multi-generational abuse. Our programs help educate youth and adults about healthy relationships and provide strategies that result in life-changing outcomes. We are grateful for Verizon’s commitment to ending domestic violence and ensuring safe communities. Their partnership is critical to our success in delivering high-impact services for survivors,” stated Heather Finlay, chief executive officer of YWCA of San Diego County.

Founded in 1908, YWCA of San Diego County empowers women, men, and children to break the cycle of domestic violence and homelessness, and achieve self-sufficiency. Serving more than 8,200 people annually. YWCA is committed to helping individuals and families recover from trauma, improve their economic status, obtain permanent housing, and secure lasting independence.
