Power to Thrive

Beyond Domestic Violence

You have the power to help survivors thrive. As we look ahead of the pandemic, we remain focused on lifting up the adult and child survivors of domestic violence who come to us for protection, healing, and opportunity for a stronger future.

Each spring, we host our In the Company of Women | Tribute to Women & Industry (TWIN) luncheon to honor extraordinary women and benefit our domestic violence programs. For the second year in a row, we must cancel our annual event that allows us to connect with our dedicated supporters and provides critical funding for survivors. As the demand for our services intensifies, we still need your support to help the families in our care.

Home is not safe for everyone. From the first call to our 24-hour hotline to the first night in emergency shelter, YWCA offers protection for adults and children to safely escape their abusers. As our families begin healing from trauma, and start to pursue economic and housing stability, we stay by their side with emotional and financial support to help build their foundation for lasting independence. The journey is difficult and unique for each survivor who now faces substantial obstacles to reach their full potential.

Heightened Need for Survivors

The impact of the pandemic has been amplified for domestic violence victims, particularly those without access to financial resources or a support system. The decision to leave can be daunting as they face new challenges of meeting basic needs, finding stable housing, pursuing legal protections, and gaining employment during an uncertain environment. For the children who witnessed the abuse, trauma and anxiety are further compounded leaving them at great risk of lifelong difficulties, including repeating the cycle of violence. While we do not yet know the full impact of the pandemic, we know that women — especially women of color — have been hardest hit in our communities. This is a heart-breaking reality for many of the families in our housing programs: over 80% are led by women of color.

YWCA remains committed to supporting all survivors by providing the physical and psychological safety they need through our gender-inclusive crisis interventions, housing programs, and advocacy services that help more than 6,000 people each year to safely escape violence and abuse, access vital resources, and rebuild their lives.

Together with your support, we can empower survivors to reclaim their freedom, achieve lasting independence, and ultimately thrive.
